In this chapter we explore probably one of the worst periods of Rossano's life, financially, and how he got out of it. Both Rossano and Lydia chat about this time in the Caffe Greco, allegedly one of the oldest cafes in Rome and just along from bottom of the Spanish Steps. The cafe is well worth a visit and they do lovely coffee and cake. The cafe can be found on Via dei Condotti.
We get more insight into Rossano and Lydia's relationship and the rather on/off relationship that Rossano had with agents. There are some great insights into their personal life, their hospitality and how much Rossano relied on Lydia behind the scenes of his career. I found this a fascinating chapter to write as Rossano had never experienced anything other than success up until this time. Even during his education and student years, he was a success. This was quite a wake-up call for the pair of them. And, with Lydia being from a wealthy nobility family, it would have hit hard. But, there is one thing I learned about Lydia. She would never let anything get her down and she would prove to be a tower of strength during this period of their lives as not only was Rossano's pride severely battered, he also dipped into depression.
This lovely drawing, I think, shows the couple as many people knew them; very together and always smiling. My thanks to artist, Sarah Bairstow, for allowing me to show this.
